What I Made Today: Checker Door Vase

I’ve really been trying to better embody my tag line: “Items that feel like the warmth of summer.” For me, that means adding more color and vibrancy, and also pushing the design aspects with more quirky and interesting ideas. I want each item in my shop to feel whimsical, bold, and fun.

Lately, I’ve been really drawn to checker patterns, particularly the black and white checker. With a pop of color, I feel like it can make for some interesting designs. I have a few propagation vases in my shop already, but I purchased some larger insets a while ago, and have had them sitting without being able to settle on a design for them. The concept for this design stemmed from the things I already mentioned: checker patterns, pops, or color, add to that arches, and beautiful doors.

I knew I wanted the vase to be arch-shaped, and that it would have the checker pattern, but for incorporating the pops of color, I initially thought of adding a secondary pattern overlaid on the checker, or maybe having randomly colored squares interrupting the black and white pattern. All through my ideation, the imagery of a door kept coming to mind. I love architectural elements like doors, columns, and windows, but I initially didn’t think it had a place on this particular design. After sitting with the thought for a bit, and experimenting with the 3d model, I came up with this design.

I love the idea of portals, doors, windows, and openings. A closed door might seem intimidating, but viewed differently, that moment of opening the door is primed with so much potential. That’s what this door means to me in the context of this design. A doorway to some place filled with joy and warmth, a portal to happy times. A physical link to a cherished memory. What lies behind the door is only limited by your imagination.

So, with an ideal destination in mind, set the vase up somewhere prominent, fill it with vibrant blooms, and every time your eye catches that doorway, let it serve as an anchor to a happy place or memory.
